What do I get from participating?

We provide $20 incentives for completing the survey and $5 for the follow-up survey as a token of appreciation. Depending on your recruitment of others, there may be additional incentives. The payment is processed through Chase Bank. You don’t need a Chase account to receive the payment.

How long does it take?

The survey lasts about 15 minutes to complete, and the follow-up survey takes about 5 minutes.

Why do I need a unique number?

Without a unique number, we cannot verify your eligibility and cannot assist you when you experience issues accessing the survey.

Why do you ask me to invite others?

You may wonder why we don’t just recruit from Korean organizations, establishments, or events. The reason why we ask you to invite other people is that this type of recruitment excludes Koreans not associated with them. Our study attempts to test whether social networks in Korean communities help more inclusive recruitment, generating data that are more representative.

Hence your inviting others is critical for the success of our study.

My unique number doesn’t work.

If you have any issues with the unique number, please contact us.

Do you ask for my personal information?

We ask your name and contact information to process the payment and send you invitations. Please note that your personal information will be kept following strict practices set by the University of Michigan to protect your privacy and data confidentiality and accessed only by the authorized research team members.

How will my survey answers be used?

Your answers to survey questions will be prepared as a research data set and shared with other researchers through a data repository at the University of Michigan as we have done with our previous study on Koreans (detail at https://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR37635.v1).
Note that your personal information will be stored separately from the survey data and will not be shared with anyone.

Why is it an internet survey?

We understand that our study will not be able to include those not on the Internet. However, according to the data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 94.7% of the Korean Americans live in households with Internet access as of 2017. While not perfect, Internet surveys are the most feasible approach to study Koreans across the country.

Do I need a computer?

No.
You can take the survey using any device that accesses the Internet (e.g., smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, etc.).
